Rethinking HUNGER

June 7, 2010

Hunger:

1 a : a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient b : an uneasy sensation occasioned by the lack of food c : a weakened condition brought about by prolonged lack of food
2 : a strong desire : craving <a hunger for success>

When you hear the word “hunger”, does food come to mind?

For several years in my 20′s, I struggled off and on with disordered eating, specifically restricting my daily calorie intake to a dangerously low-level, resulting in weight loss that left my body in a vulnerable, unhealthy condition. I was too skinny. I knew it.  My loved ones knew it, and one day I realized it was crucial for me to reconcile my relationship with food, relinquish control, and get healthy. In the past couple of years, I’ve paid attention to my body’s needs, cravings and sensitive digestion to choose the best foods to provide energy while maintaining a healthy weight for my height and activity level.  As I begin a new chapter in my life, I am challenging myself to think of hunger in a variety of ways, including food of course.

  • hunger for fun
  • hunger for love
  • hunger for gratitude
  • hunger for challenge
  • hunger for happiness
  • hunger for relaxation
  • hunger for knowledge
  • hunger for organization
  • hunger for productivity
  • hunger for nourishment
  • hunger for improvement
  • hunger for self-acceptance
  • hunger for personal growth
  • hunger for unprocessed, whole foods

What are you hungry for?
