I was so surprised in the moment. I knew we wanted to spend our life together but he’d done a fantastic job of throwing me off by subtly alluding to the fact that he planned to propose in New York City. We spent most of our first year together in Manhattan and I thought it would be an incredibly romantic place for a proposal. Billy had other plans.
The scene: 5:30AM in Napa Valley waiting for the driver to take us to the hot air balloon launch.
Sleepy, happy faces. I had no idea at this moment that the details of this day would forever be etched in my heart.
Before we knew it, we were floating high. It was so still and quiet and calm.
A soft whisper, “Bird, will you marry me?”
There was momentary disbelief. Then tears. And tight hugs. And pure elation.
And it was beautiful.
From Napa, we headed south with stops in San Francisco, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and ended our week in L.A.
Many people have actually told me they would never want a proposal like this, so early in the morning, surprised with bed head and no makeup. I was wearing Billy’s sweater. He was wearing my extra pashmina. We didn’t have our iPhones. I said “yes” as the sun was rising and we were 100% present in the moment. Never in my life has anything ever been so right. And that’s why he’s the one for me.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
