Deadbird’s Row

April 14, 2011

I referred to this last month in a post, What Do You Do?

poster_E_red_2008

It’s good to remember that what might be scary for one person is an everyday occurrence for another. Maybe that’s going to a movie by yourself, standing up for yourself, loving someone else, loving yourself…that can be scary!

But the scary things are always a rewarding learning experience.

My scary thing yesterday?

DSC01165

I went to CrossFit for the 3rd time at my 3rd location, CrossFit Deep Ellum.

DSC01171

There’s a CrossFit lingo that I’m unfamiliar with, so most of the time I have no idea what anyone is talking about. Thankfully, everyone is helpful to the newbird, and I’m picking it up quickly.

orange

There’s always a warm-up of sorts. Yesterday’s warm-up:

DSC01169

Run 400 meters? No problem. Now please explain all those other things…

orange

Then onto the W.O.D. = workout of the day. These are posted online so you can know what to expect beforehand…or decide not to go. Ha. I literally did a Google search for “row” and “deadlifts”, and watched a YouTube video.

DSC01168

Clearly I’d never done either of the things required of the W.O.D., but I was ready to step outside my comfort zone. We had 12 minutes to row 2 kilometers, then do as many deadlifts as possible. In my limited experience, there’s always a score in CrossFit. I’m only competitive with myself, so my goal was just to finish the workout.

orange

Have you ever used a row machine? It was difficult for me, but I sort of loved it! Girls went first, then the guys.

DSC01170 DSC01163

Onto deadlifts.

DSC01179

Our scores.

DSC01166

My goal next time is to cut my row by 1 minute and add at least 4 deadlifts. The row is like running a race in that you don’t want to go out too fast, or you’ll burn out before you get to the end. Now I know I can push a little harder next go round.

orange

Our lululemon crew in the back row, with an enthusiastic CrossFitter up front. She’s hardcore, brought her kids with her to class, and inspired me.

DSC01182

(Josh – are you reading? This is your 2nd shirtless picture on my blog in a week.)

orange

So my point in posting this is to prove that if I can try new things like rowing and deadlifts, you can try new things, too! And you don’t have to be amazing at it – just give it your all. Remember:

IF YOU ARE NEVER A BEGINNER, YOU ARE NEVER TRYING ANYTHING NEW.

(And that would be so boring.)

What’s the latest “new thing” you have tried? It does not have to be fitness related.

Do you have any interest in CrossFit?

It’s Friday! What are you doing this weekend?

I’m working today, tomorrow, and Sunday, going to a birthday party, a costume party, and a wedding shower. With some early morning workouts mixed in. Whew! I wasn’t kidding when I said life is currently busier than ever.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on yesterday’s post for a chance to win my humility-inspired impromptu giveaway. Your comments so far make me smile!

And last, but NOT least, my dear friend is going to be on the radio tomorrow morning in Dallas at 11:00AM, station 1190AM, reaching out to the Dallas yoga community. TUNE IN if you can! http://www.rationalradio.org/

  2. Wow! Crossfit sounds intense and VERY out of your element which is so cool to see! Can you explain what the PVC good mornings are?? Those totally intrigued me, haha!

Let’s see…something new for me. Probably everyday of my job since I’ve only been here about 3 months or so. Everything feels new and different and out of place. But it’s growing on me! Everyday is a new day, right??

Wow, dorry, you completely inspire me with this crossfit workout! Thanks for sharing – I’ve heard of crossfit, and there are a couple of gyms in town, but I’ve never tried it. I like how you are competing with yourself – that’s awesome.
Enjoy your busy weekend! I am working, too. I know that our work will be fun for each of us! :)

I would love to try Crossfit — it is in the plans for this summer when I’m done with the marathon training! I think it would be too much for me to add new stuff in. Plus Crossfit looks super intense!!!

Weekend plans – date night tonight, spending the day with my younger sister Kim tomorrow, and going out with a friend for dinner tomorrow night! Should be fun!

I have been wanting to try crossfit. There is one just down the street from my work…and it is free on saturdays but driving all the way to work on a sat morning is tough to fit in during such a busy time for me too!

my weekend is filled with tball game, birthday party for my son, family in town…and my poor little boy woke up with a fever this morning, I am hoping he feels better tomorrow!

    • dorrybird on said:

You should definitely try a free Saturday workout and see how you like it. :)

Hope the fever is gone and that y’all are having a great weekend!

I love the t-shirt, too! If I keep going and become a regular, maybe one day I’ll wear it, too. Ha. ;)

I think CrossFit can be pretty pricey…but most of them offer a free weekly workout so you can try it out before committing!

Way to go you for doing CrossFit. It scares the bejesus out of me. It just seems soo intense and HARDCORE.

I used to row crew in high school so I am very acquainted with rowing machines (we called them ergs in high school). Those things are HARD.

    • dorrybird on said:

So cool that you rowed in high school! It’s really hard, but I liked it. I’d probably like it more in real life so I could go somewhere…like in actual water.

  14. Dorry, you are awesome!! Jason has band practice tonight, so I am going to dinner with one sister <3 tomorrow Jason and I are going to my favorite photography store, because my dining room doesn't yet look enough like a studio. ;) taking a girlfriend to my gym later to see if she wants to join, and then having a bunch of people over for dinner and possibly karaoke, my favorite. :) Sunday is pretty open except for lunch with my Dad, which is nice because maybe it'll be a nice lazy day. :D

have a wonderful weekend, Bird <3

  15. glad you keep trying CF! I go 2x/week and haven’t skipped my pattern in 1.5 years. it makes you strong in body and mind. Rowing is hard for me, it leaves me breathless and i’m very slow because of short arms and legs. deadlifts and rowing are similar movements, if they didn’t show you the similarities.
i really like a lot of CF movements because it’s not just for one muscle group. and i love CF because every class is different. keep at it! it doesn’t get easier, but you get more comfortable with the lingo and movements.

    • dorrybird on said:

Love what you said about strong in body & mind…so true! I feel like now that I’ve experienced it, I just have to keep going. It’s exhilarating.

I would agree that the Crossfit chick in your pic is hardcore; check out those guns!! dang!
Something new that I am currently trying? I am trying to keep some thoughts to myself! I have a need to express myself & I think it is generally a good idea for people to talk about their feelings with one another… BUT recent conversations with my boyfriend have shown me that some times I just need to let things be. I guess you could say I need to “pick my battles.” This is very new for me! If there is something on my mind, I want to say it right then & there but I guess that can be counterproductive sometimes.

    Anyway, enjoy your busy weekend!

I know! Seriously big guns. She was so incredibly nice, too, with a thick accent of some kind. I’m not sure from where, though! Oh Jen – I have trained myself to do the same. I have this need to sometimes say everything out loud, when in reality, I just need to keep it to myself!

  22. Heather @ Dietitian on the Run on said:

Ha, gah those X-fitters are crazy. I wouldn’t have had a clue what that workout said either. Talk run/yoga/bike and I hear ya – talk strength training and I need a one-on-one.

This week, we did Keg lifts (yes, as in a beer keg – it was empty, but WHOA are those things heavy) and squats with a partner holding a ginormous tire (like Semi-truck style. I could barely hold up my end)! Needless to say my arms are burning today… ;)

    Happy weekend!

I LOVE CrossFit. Sadly, I haven’t done it in a while… but I still hold onto the workouts at heart. Rowing is badass. HARD as hell but amazing. My warmup will often include a few 400 meters or more. That works every inch of your body.

Anyway, I love the message here! Your blog is so inspiring! And it’s true- you have to be a beginner at some point… and that’s a very good thing!

    • dorrybird on said:

Thank you, Lori! Comments like this make me smile. :) I’m going to try a realistic commitment to CrossFit for my schedule. Probably 2 times a week, maybe 3!
