Pizza & Giveaway Winners

May 13, 2011

Billy and I made pizza at home last night. He used a store-bought crust from Whole Foods and made fresh pizza sauce using canned whole tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and garlic. Simple and SO delicious. I almost ate it with a spoon.

I made a socca crust made with chickpea flour, salt, pepper, and warm water. (I left out the garlic powder pictured below.)

Even though I coated the pan with olive oil, my socca stuck a bit to the bottom.

Mine with veggies, basil and nooch (for flavor and important B vitamins). Billy’s with mozzarella, chorizo on half, tomato slices, and basil.

His is clearly the winner.

Not that there was ever really a contest to begin with. Have you seen the way he prepares food??

Yes! I need to get in the habit of baking more often. I have bookmarked so many recipe links and I need to start checking them off!

Holly @ The Runny Egg May 13, 2011 at 10:29 am

I wish I could get into reading for hours, but I just can’t! Maybe if I’m on a beach, but even then I like to take walks. Sadly, my reading time is usually right before bedtime which doesn’t last too long. :)

sarah (sarah learns) May 13, 2011 at 10:32 am

my favorite pizza toppings are always lots of veggies! i think mushrooms are probably my favorite though. :)

i like relaxing with brad and taking long walks with our dog on my days off.

mushrooms are so good on pizza! I think it’s the texture. Days off always equals long bike rides with Billy for me. :)

Kris May 13, 2011 at 10:37 am

hee – that photo of Billy could be ME every time I have fresh basil… oh it is my favorite…

I think both pizzas look good – I’d love to have a pizza party with you two!

congrats to the giveaway winners… the number geek in me likes the doubles that came up. 😀

I’m such a number nerd, too. I was a little bummed they were both odd numbers because I’m a fan of evens, but thanks for pointing out the doubles! I just went back and edited my post to link “basil” to your BASIL. Is he with y’all on vacation?? Add pizza party to the list of things we’ll do together. I think sushi, tea, GF baked goods, and long walks are on the list so far….xoxoxoxo

Kris May 13, 2011 at 10:59 am

aw, Basil is happy when you link to him <3

he is NOT with us, and I miss him so! we thought about bringing him, but when we reach napa especially, we have a couple restaurants we are going to, bike rides and wine tasting he may not be able to join… we plan on taking another long road trip that might be more camping, etc, and we'd definitely bring him then! right now he's chillin with my parents and their two doxies – major Long Dog party!! 😀

I love that you’ve been in California and Napa the exact same week Billy and I were road-tripping in the same area! Such a beautiful part of the country. Maybe y’all will go on a hot air balloon ride? :) Love that Basil is a big ole Long Dog party!

cathy May 13, 2011 at 10:46 am

Both the pizzas look awesome and delicious!
I like tomato sauce, mushrooms and olives on my pizza. I’d love to try socca crust (crust is the best part of pizza, LOL!).
I like to spend time outside, hang out in a coffee shop and putter around the home on my day off…keep it simple. But those things make me happy!
Have a super weekend, dorry!

dorrybird May 15, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I agree – crust is the best part. I really like it crispy! Simplicity on days off are key – otherwise you feel like you need a day off from your day off. Hope you had a wonderful weekend. :)

lindsay May 13, 2011 at 11:29 am

if I was your neighbor, I would have invited myself over for YOUR pizza! I love all the fresh ingredients. Summer time pizza making is the BEST!!
Love you friend.

If you were my neighbor, you’d have an open invitation to come over! Especially when Billy is cooking. :)

Heather @ Dietitian on the Run May 13, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Mmmm, we’re doing a pizza night Friday! This just got me more excited than I already am 😉 I love the fresh dough at WF – I’ll be picking some up on the way home! This inspired me to make my own sauce, too. It’s been a while since I’ve done that! Fave toppings: tomatoes, basil & mozzarella. The BEST.

Happy weekend you two!

Making the sauce was SO simple and seriously so much better than anything I’ve ever had out of a jar. Hope you had a wonderful weekend starting with your Friday night pizza!

Heather (Where's the Beach) May 13, 2011 at 12:50 pm

I’m so annoyed, tried to get chickpea flour from whole foods and they didn’t have any??? And ours doesn’t carry the fresh dough either. Crazy. Anyway, Love love love homemade pizza. It’s Pizza Friday at our house!

What a bummer! I got mine at Sunflower Market, but I’m pretty sure my Whole Foods has it, too. You can always request for Whole Foods to carry new things. They started carrying all the new larabar flavors when I made a request! :)

dorrybird May 15, 2011 at 5:51 pm

Love arugula! That’s a great idea. The fresh greens make the pizza taste so fresh.

(what runs) Lori May 13, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Gah. Those pizzas look amazing! I love socca… made into a pizza is just wonderful. So simple too.

What are those other things that Billy’s made? Those taco-looking things? I must know!

dorrybird May 15, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Billy is so good in the kitchen! He made corn masa boats and crispy chicken tortillas from recipes in a cookbook all about Mexican appetizers. More info in this post: :)

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine May 14, 2011 at 7:13 am

Those last two pictures are AWESOME!! I love really really fresh tomato sauce with olive oil and basil on my pizza. You don’t even need cheese if the tomatoes are flavorful enough!!

I agree 100%! The sauce is KEY and the simplicity of Billy’s sauce was so delicious. And so easy!

CH May 14, 2011 at 8:59 am

Oooo, I just had pasta with fresh basil and mozzarella last night. It was truly amazing. Fresh whole-milk mozzarella and basil are one of God’s gifts to man (and woman) kind. I love them on pizza. My other favorite pizza topping combo is feta, yellow hot peppers, and chicken. Hope you guys have a good weekend!

dorrybird May 15, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Yellow hot peppers sounds so delicious on pizza! Billy is in complete agreement with you about mozzarella. It’s his favorite!

Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food May 15, 2011 at 10:02 am

I love all pizza to be honest but my favorite is our homemade veggie supremes topped with criminis, red onion, bell pepper, broccoli and sharp cheddar cheese :)

Hope you’re having a great weekend! :)

dorrybird May 15, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Sounds so delicious! I’m in agreement about LOTS of veggies on my pizza.
