Things I Learned in NYC, Part 1

August 30, 2011

I’ve missed my blog since last week! It was great to step away from the laptop, hang onto my camera, and experience all that Manhattan has to offer…including potential hurricanes. We flew to NYC last Thursday, and just returned last night.

It’s bittersweet to be home, but I’ve had a great time looking through my photos from the long weekend, and now it’s time for an action-packed day. Remember how busy my Tuesdays can be??

Things I learned:

A banana & packet of nut butter is still the most delicious & convenient travel snack.

Don’t buy round-trip tickets on the NJ Transit to get from Newark to Manhattan when there’s a hurricane coming to town that potentially might interrupt scheduled rides. (We took a cab to the airport yesterday evening because the trains weren’t running.)

Do wear luon crops from lululemon, and your new Nike Frees everywhere because they are both so comfortable. Well, maybe not everywhere.

People who work at lululemon athletica are friendly, kind, and open. It was fun to visit different stores in Manhattan. (More to come on that.)

Stay in a hotel that brings you a complimentary afternoon fruit plate, and eat it all before Billy has a chance to know it was there in the 1st place.

Running with your camera isn’t as annoying as I thought it might be, and LÄRABARS are my perfect pre-run fuel (already knew, but reinforced).

I could be very happy living in NYC if for nothing more (but there’s soooo much more) than the countless convenient, and healthy, food options.

I found a new favorite market (there are so many fabulous markets in Manhattan):

The Plaza Hotel will always be one of my favorite places to visit, and to photograph. I’d love to stay there someday. (Eloise & Home Alone 2, anyone?)

DSC03866

Birds and horses make me happy.

“No photos, please.”

It’s OK to be a tourist and rent bicycles to ride around Central Park…

If you’re able to capture magical images like these:

There are many more lessons learned on this trip to New York City. Stay tuned!

What’s one little lesson you’ve learned while traveling?

I’ve been out of the loop since last Thursday. I’ve missed you all, so please tell me one thing that’s new with you!

GORGEOUS! i love all the color and i love that you met the other lulu’s. Bird and Bee’s adventures make me smile.
    :P
I learn to pack light and always bring an extra set of clothes in your carry on. I think i learned that the hard way and traveling stand by. haha.

yes! We never check bags anymore after some bad experiences. I’ve gotten pretty good at narrowing down the important things when packing for a trip…I still almost always have extra clothes and shoes though. :)

  3. LOVE all of your gorgeous pics, your trip looks a-mazing and so full of memories. I can’t wait to hear more!

Hmm, one new thing about me in the last week? I signed up for another half marathon, for starters. tee hee ;-)

Thanks, Jess! Very exciting about your next half marathon! I have to tell you – between traveling and reading blogs on my phone, I haven’t commented on your posts in far too long, but I have been reading! They are all still marked as unread in my Google Reader because when I have some down time, I’m coming to catch up on your blog. xoxo

Based on these photos, you’d never even know you guys were there during 1) an evacuation and 2) a hurricane!! Nice exploring skills ;)

I am so excited to take the train up to NYC soon – maybe one weekend I can meet you there on one of your adventures!

I hope y’all can get to NYC for a great weekend of playing and exploring the city. So many amazing restaurants to try!

  11. One travel lesson I’ve learned: always get travelers insurance, because one never knows :-) I heart NYC! My favorite city, after Chicago of course.

    • dorrybird on said:

We just talked with some friends about this recently – how travel insurance is such a wise idea! I love Chicago, too. It’s such a beautiful, clean city.

    I LOVE the alice sculpture!!

I learned that it’s so much more powerful to attend a conference where there is a BIG common theme BESIDES being bloggers. I was also reminded how wonderful my city is – and am loving the view from others eyes.

Oh, Kris! I’m sure it was such an incredible conference full of inspirational speakers. I hear someone say something great about Portland at least a couple of times a week. Several of my co-workers want to move there! :)

Out of the loop since Thursday? I’ve been gone waaaaaaay longer than that so have oodles of catching up to do!

What’s new? Trianing for a 10 mile race. I’ve only done 5k’s before :s Since then I’ve gone cold turkey on running for 18 months (had to in order to feel ‘OK’ about not doing it every. single. day.), reintroduced it ONCE a week at no more or less than 30 mins. Total mind-bender trying to be balanced in my approach to this – but equally getting so so bored training on the treadmill in the week. Outdoor runs are tolerable, however

    Any advice?

Woooooooah waffle. That’s why I shouldn’t stay away so long – tumbles out!

I love outdoor runs when the weather is nice, and have a hard time running more than 30 minutes or so on a treadmill. I’ve love the Tread Fitness class I attend a couple of times a week because they mix it up with speed intervals and hill workouts!

  14. Great pics!! One thing I have learned with my endless work travels? ALWAYS pack lots of snacks. NOTHING worse than a cross country flight with zero good food options. We missed you too! Something new about me this week? I moved! M and I now live together in a glorious apartment. Perfection :)

    • dorrybird on said:

yes to snacks! I’m really never without them, and I’ve learned you can never have to many. Oh, that’s right! A new apartment with M. :) Love what you wrote last week about going to sleep and waking up to each other. I’ve been reading your blog, but mostly on my iPhone and haven’t been able to comment. I need more hours in the day!
