Bird’s Brain, Take 7

June 5, 2012

on my mind:

I’m on a mission for the perfect salsa – preferably one with low or no garlic (not a fan!). I’ve found a good one at Trader Joe’s, but the search continues.

I’m having a 24-hour obsession with making a bean-based dessert after reading this post by Mama Pea. chocolate-chip blondies and chocolate-chip brownies. Evan’s dessert hummus would also be a winner. I think I’ll pick up a can of chickpeas today!

I haven’t driven a car since April 11th, and I’m more than okay with that. bike, run, walk, occasional cab or subway ride. but mostly, I ride my bike.

I met a girl from Houston a few days ago, and I told her that my husband went to law school in Houston. she asked me, “where?”, and I could not remember. it was an awkward moment, but she was nice not to make me feel like a moron. I’m not sure what to say about this. for the record, I actually do know where B went to law school.

yesterday, I came home to find my brand new pair of Nike Frees! I ordered the same version of the Frees I currently have because I love them so much, and this particular color was on sale with free shipping. purple shoes. thank you, Lady Foot Locker.

I over-ran in these, but I love them so much. my knees are going to be very happy with the new ones. I went for an awesome run this morning!

I love the trader joe’s salsa (I forget the name of it but it’s the really smooth version they have (without any chunks of tomatoes in it). I’m on the hunt for a really good fresh salsa recipe. I can “see” what I want it to be like in my head but I haven’t quite translated that to an actual recipe in my kitchen yet! Maybe once the produce is fresh and local here I’ll be inspired!

yes! I like that one, too. no chunks – just good smooth salty salsa. :) I’d love to make some homemade salsa…or pico – I’m not a fan of red onions so I need to create my own recipe!

Trader Joe’s salsa is so good! I actually found one at a store that I don’t think is in NYC but it has corn in it and I LOVE that southwestern angle to it! The sneaks you got are awesome, and will totally help you with more kick ass runs!! Wish we could run together! one day soon!

umm i’m glad it’s not just me dorry. the other day a co-worker asked me where i went on my honeymoon (it was early in the morning at the yoga studio and maybe i wasn’t fully awake yet) but for the life of me i could not remember the name of the island. i literally blanked. hello?! felt really silly and it came to me after a few minutes but a bit taken a back. guess we are getting older ;)

    • dorrybird on said:

that’s exactly what happened to me! it was the morning, too, but I’d already been for a run, showered, and was at work, so I can’t use “still asleep” as an excuse. haha. I just literally went blank. at least we’re in this thing together. ;)

    Aw, the mental lapse!

I am convinced they are necessary for people like us…..I think each time we have one it is God creating a temporary hole in our minds to let all kinds of good stuff flow inside so we can share.

PS — were those shoes a meant to be or what? purple, on sale, free shipping & you needed them! Serendipity! Plus they look fabulous. Of course.

oh, I like your explanation for it! that sounds good to me. :) much better than early signs of memory loss. the purple shoes were so meant to be! very happy bird feet/knees.

I love those shoes! I just made blondies with chickpeas for the first time about two weeks ago. I took them to a party and they were gone before all of the other desserts!

me?! forgetful All The Time. *sigh*

beans in desserts are one of my very favorite. the first blog post I ever wrote was about a black bean brownie from my mom, and I have made several chickpea cookie flavors. I made a new one last week! I know some (many!?) think beans in sweets is weird, but I love it – I tend toward natural sweet flavors on the mild side.

I’ve never tried a dessert hummus, but would absolutely be up for trying one. I think beans in desserts are brilliant. And I forget ALL the time.

Homemade is the way to go… You can make it as chunky or as smooth as you like!
Tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt, Valentina’s Hot Sauce and a small sliver of red Fresno pepper… put it in the blender and voila!
Alternatives are to add thins like peaches, corn, tomatillo, black beans, mango and other options to change up the norm.
    Happy Salsaing Dorry!
