butterfly in the sky

August 29, 2012

I was sitting on my couch last night thinking about this blog post, and I started laughing so hard when the title of the post reminded me of a very early childhood TV show. please tell me someone out there remembers Reading Rainbow??

Reading Rainbow

I immediately found the YouTube video and sang it for Billy, then sent a text to both of my sisters which turned into a full-on 80s TV show theme song sing-a-long.

“butterfly in the sky…I can go twice as high!” anyone?

now I really do have a point to this post…maybe.

as I mentioned on Monday, we spent a couple of hours on the roof Sunday afternoon into the evening. there were a handful of beautiful butterflies relaxing in the sun.

our building has 18 stories which Billy says is approximately 180 feet high + the added height to get to the roof. that is a long way for a butterfly to travel upwards, right? do they know where they are going as they climb higher and higher in the air?

I think it’s pretty incredible that in all of their delicateness, they find their way to our rooftop. they make a happy home amongst the blooming flowers and they have the most spectacular views of the city.

so, how did they decide to make their way to the roof?

I think sometimes we have to take a leap of faith, even if we don’t know where we’ll end up. if that little butterfly can make it almost 200 feet in the air, what can we do?

are you headed upwards in an area of your life?

p.s. sorry if you got this post twice in your email/reader – little technical difficulty!

Oh my gosh– I am so glad that you sing that song too! Occasionally I will sing that song to my friends just for fun. Is it weird that I find it inspirational?

not weird at all! I have such awesome memories from watching it as a child, and it reminds me of my sisters. the whole show was uplifting and inspirational! glad you sing it – makes me happy to know others remember and enjoy it, too!

So cool to be able to see them up on your rooftop – it has to seem much less like the concrete city they make NY to be ya know? It’s always fun to just watch them flit around so carefree.

our rooftop really is our place to “escape” and we talk all the time about how thankful we are to be able to go up there and take in the view/get a different perspective of this crazy city.

  4. Aw man, I just read Lindsay’s post on moving FORWARD and then your post on moving UPWARDS and taking a leap of faith and you two are IN my brain big time lately!! I needed to hear both of your messages of faith and fortitude today…I heart you ladies so much!! Thank you!!

PS butterflies always give me such a sense of calm, I think it’s because I think of a butterfly as a little ‘hi’ from my nonna. They remind me of her…not sure why, but they just do.

I feel the same way about every single post you write! I’m also learning, humbled, inspired, and grateful for what you share in your writing. and that is so precious about your nonna – I love that Jo mentioned it in her comment, too. <3

  5. I LOVED Reading Rainbow!! LOL! That made me giggle but I can’t watch the video only because the song will just get in my head ;-) Butterflies are so calming and so peaceful, and like Jess said, remind me of my Nonna. Love your post and this message so so much!

  7. haha. My husband likes to randomly lift me up when he’s laying on the ground balancing me in a superman pose with his arms and legs while singing, “butterfly in the sky. I can go twice as high!” while I beg him to let me down (because obviously death is nigh). Good times.

hahaha – this is so awesome! sounds like you and your husband are a bit like me and Billy. always fun to be lighthearted and joke around, especially when retro 80s children’s TV show lyrics are involved!

Those butterflies are beautiful. I just started have faith this year – sounds weird but true. I thought I had to make everything work. I learned that I have to faith that there is a bigger picture and everything happens for a reason. Enjoy the journey and love.
